Racing League hopeful Elisha Whittington a hit with Windsor pupils

Last week, 92 pupils from Windsor-based Trevelyan Middle School’s Year 5 group were treated to a unique Racing to School takeover of their usual maths lesson. The event followed on from a recent visit by the pupils to Ascot racecourse for a racecourse activity day with the charity, and celebrated Racing to School’s fourth year as the Racing League’s charity partner with a focus on the maths at the heart of the competition.

Pupils explored the application of addition and averages when calculating the points needed by jockeys and teams to win a race and, ultimately, the League.

John Blake, Chief Executive of Racing to School said “The charity is proud to be a founding partner with the Racing League and the team will be at all six fixtures this summer adding to the offering for young people and families.

“The League has grown in popularity each year and engagement with the jockeys has been a successful innovation. We always want to trial going out to a school with proximity to one of the venues and are so grateful to jockey Elisha Whittington for attending a unique school assembly for almost 100 young people. We hope that many of them will be able to come along to the Windsor fixture in mid-August to see the live action and to keep a close eye on how the teams are scoring.”

Elisha Whittington was on hand to share the inspiring story of her journey from a pony-mad teenager from a non-horsey family to Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Newcomer Award winner in 2017.

Her expert demonstration on the equisicer was the cue for the pupils to don a set of Racing League silks and have a go themselves.

The session ended with the exciting news from organisers Arena Racing Company (ARC) and The Racing League that they were supporting a jockey’s silk design competition open to all young people across Britain up to Year 6 where the top 10 designs will be shortlisted for the chance to win great Racing League prizes, including family entry to their local Racing League event.
