Newmarket Academy Year 9 pupils build confidence through mock interviews
The mock interview sessions for Year 9 pupils at Newmarket Academy is a key part of the Godolphin Beacon Project, which marks its 10th anniversary this academic year.
The aim is to support Year 9 pupils to develop interview skills and gain confidence ahead of future education and career opportunities.
Sessions were held on 11th and 18th November, supported by professionals from Godolphin, Newmarket Racecourse, Juddmonte, the Racehorse Owners Association, NARS and Discover Newmarket, and the Racing to School team. The interviews enabled pupils to recognise their strengths and better understand how to prepare and approach these key events. NAGBP Silver Badges were awarded to 20 pupils in recognition of their exceptional participation.
One of the pupils, Ella said: “Taking part in the mock interviews helped me start thinking about my future goals and aspirations. It gave me an advantage for when I have interviews for college or work. We were asked questions about where we see ourselves in five years’ time which really made me think about my future life and what it looks like.
“The interviewer pointed out helpful tips such as making eye contact, sitting up straight and always being polite. The opportunity has made me feel more confident in myself and ready for future interviews that I may have.”
One of the Beacon’s strengths is to engage other parts of the industry to support the year-round activities led by Racing to School.

The time the team spend on these initiatives is excellent and it was great to meet and chat with the pupils. Their confidence shone through, and they presented themselves and their answers in a very professional and engaging manner – I wish them all the very best for the future.”
