Newmarket Academy’s new Headteacher, Claire Preston shares what inspired her to pursue a career in teaching and the role the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project (NAGBP) plays in broadening students’ horizons.
Education has always been about making a positive difference in young people’s lives. Teaching offers a unique opportunity to influence not only academic outcomes but also character, aspirations and life chances. The privilege of helping young people discover what they are capable of is what continues to inspire me every day.
Not just another initiative
When the opportunity arose to join Newmarket Academy, several aspects immediately stood out. During my very first conversations about the role, I heard passionate discussions about the school’s strong community partnerships, particularly the relationship with Godolphin through the Beacon Project. It was clear from the outset that this was not simply another school initiative, but something deeply embedded within the culture and identity of the school.

My first impressions of the Academy have been overwhelmingly positive. Throughout the recruitment process and since arriving in February, I have been struck by the pride that students, staff and families have in their school. There is a strong sense of belonging and a shared commitment to ensuring students have access to opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. The warm welcome I have received from colleagues, parents and community partners has reinforced my belief that Newmarket Academy is a school with enormous potential and an exciting future.
Authentic experiences through the NAGBP
One of the most distinctive features of the student experience at Newmarket Academy is undoubtedly the Godolphin Beacon Project, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. As I learned more about the partnership, what impressed me most was not only the wide range of activities available but the impact they have on students. This year alone, students have participated in more than 36 different experiences and opportunities. These activities help young people build confidence, resilience and ambition while broadening their horizons and developing important life skills.

I saw the impact of this work at first-hand when I attended our Year 7 Maths Day delivered by partner Racing to School. While mathematics sat at the heart of the event, students were also collaborating, presenting, problem solving and communicating with confidence. The experience perfectly demonstrated what makes the Beacon Project so special. It provides authentic learning opportunities that help students connect their education with the wider world, while creating memories that remain with them long after the event has ended.

The importance of community connections
Newmarket Academy’s connection to the local community is another of its greatest strengths. The town has a rich heritage and unique opportunities, particularly through its links to the racing industry. It is incredibly important that students engage with local organisations, employers and community partners because these experiences help them understand the pathways available to them in the future. By building these connections, students gain valuable insights into careers, develop employability skills and recognise the importance of contributing positively to their community. Partnerships such as those with Godolphin and Racing to School demonstrate the power of collaboration in helping young people broaden their ambitions and see new possibilities for their future.

Our next chapter
Looking ahead, I am excited by what lies ahead for Newmarket Academy. My aspiration is to build upon the strong foundations already in place while continuing to raise expectations and expand opportunities for every student. I want to see even more opportunities for leadership, personal development and career exploration. Most importantly, I want to ensure that students remain at the heart of every decision we make.
As we begin this next chapter, I am incredibly proud to lead a school with such strong community support, dedicated staff and ambitious young people. Together, we have an exciting opportunity to continue developing a school where every student can thrive, succeed and truly shine.
