Newmarket Academy students gain exclusive insight into Irish horseracing on cultural exchange

Swapping their usual school routine for an enriching cultural experience, eight Year 9 students from Newmarket Academy enjoyed a three-day exchange trip to Ireland last week. The trip immersed students, some of whom had never travelled by plane before, in the country’s rich Thoroughbred heritage and formed part of the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project (NAGBP), a joint venture between Racing to School, Godolphin and Newmarket Academy seeking to expand the aspiration and ambition of every student in the school.

Considering the value of the exchange, Danielle Dawson, Head of Business & IT and NAGBP Coordinator said: ” This experience has had an incredible impact on the students, pushing them beyond their comfort zones and opening their eyes to new cultures and perspectives. It has not only strengthened their confidence but also inspired them with huge aspirations for the future, showing them the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.”

The visit to the Irish National Stud and Gardens on day two saw students take part in the Irish Racehorse Experience, an immersive VR attraction that brings the world of racing to life. Here they delved into the history of the Irish Thoroughbred, designed their own jockey silks, tested their race commentary skills, and even bred and trained their own virtual racehorses. The experience culminated in a thrilling challenge on the Equicisors, where students raced against one another in a test of skill and stamina. The day ended on a high with a special visit to meet and interact with retired champions Faugheen, Hurricane Fly, and Beef or Salmon who were only too happy to receive plenty of petting and polos.

Reflecting on the trip, Racing to School’s Programme Manager Ollie McPhail said: “This has been an incredible experience for the students, giving them a chance to connect with others from different cultures while learning about the Irish thoroughbred industry. The VR racehorse experience was a real highlight, and I know the students will carry these unique experiences with them for years to come.”

The students also visited Godolphin’s Kildangan Stud, home to their world class Irish breeding programme and legendary stallion Night of Thunder, who they chance to meet before moving to the Mare and Foals unit to see a two-day-old foal.

In the second leg of the exchange, students from St Pauls Secondary School will travel to Newmarket in May to explore the home of horseracing.
