ITV Racing’s Richard Hoiles talks to pupils about his unique job as a commentator

Pupils from Esher Church of England High School were taken to the best seat in the house when they met ITV commentator Richard Hoiles at Sandown on Friday 6th July. The group was taking part in a Racing to School Maths Activity day – one of 24 kindly sponsored by The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust.

As an extra treat alongside a busy day’s learning around the racecourse, the local pupils had the chance to go up to the press room and commentary box to meet Richard as he prepared for his day behind the microphone. The pupils listened to Richard talk about Sir Peter’s own long career as the ‘Voice of Racing’ and the many challenges to being a commentator.

His in-depth talk covered tips on how to distinguish between different horses in a race (watch video below).

Racing to School is so grateful to Richard for taking the time to speak to our participants, and to Sandown for allowing us special access to the commentary box. We are also extremely thankful to the Trustees of The Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust for funding this programme, which will engage around 750 young people nationwide, and be a tribute to the legacy of Sir Peter.
