The Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project (NAGBP) was launched in September 2016 as part of a shared vision between Newmarket’s largest employer, Godolphin and the town’s only Secondary School to support and enrich the lives of young people in the local community.

The joint venture between Godolphin, Newmarket Academy and the education charity Racing to School has two key goals: to expand the aspiration and ambition of every student in the school through presenting the diverse career pathways that exist for them; and to provide students with the tools required to pursue these ambitions. The racing industry is a common thread throughout the programme, with partners that include: Newmarket and Huntingdon Racecourses; Palace House; The National Stud; The British Racing School; Dalham Hall Stud; Rossdales Vets; Moulton Paddocks; Park Lodge Stables; Tattersalls and the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel.

The events are spread across the year groups and the academic year, and the programme covers a wide variety of learning and career pathways, including Maths; Business Studies; Hospitality; Careers Advice; Foot Technology; Art and Travel & Tourism. All of these subjects combine to provide a learning programme that expands ambitions and provides practical skills and knowledge to pursue them, both within racing and beyond.

Reflecting on the end of the summer term and the second year of the Godolphin-sponsored Beacon, Academy Principal Nick Froy said:

“We are delighted with the way that the Project has grown this year. We have been able to provide greater coverage, and more bespoke intervention over the course of this year. The Beacon project has been a fantastic success bringing an incredible range of benefits to the students at the Academy ranging from greater awareness and ambition to confidence and global understanding. The Academy joins with Racing to School to thank our amazing supporters for their generosity and help this year.”

The Programme consists of approximately 30 events per academic year, engaging over 500 pupils aged 11-18 years old who live in the heart of racing’s main training centre.

Racing to School is extremely grateful to Godolphin and H H Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who kindly fund the project as part of their ongoing commitment to young people , the town of Newmarket and the racing industry.
